The body should not lean forwards or backwards during this exercise, only from one side to the other.
To start, stand tall and straight with the feet shoulder width apart. Bend the knees slightly then lower the upper body to one side and then to the other side.

Do not lean forward or backwards, only side to side.

Twisting Torso

The torso twist is a perfect follow-up to the side bend since it is also performed from an upright position. Twisting the torso is a perfect way to help lose love handles.

Start in the same position as with side bends, standing straight with feet shoulder width apart. Now, twist the midsection from side to side.

The important thing to remember is to twist the torso, not the hips. Twisting the hips eliminates any benefits for the torso. Concentrate on remaining tall and straight and using obliques during the twist.

Side Crunch

To prepare for this exercise and the next one place a mat or towel on the floor for cushioning if necessary. Lie down on one side, it doesnt matter which because both sides will be used by the end of the routine.

Starting on the right, place the right arm over the waist with the right hand coming to rest on the left side. Next, lift up the left hand and touch the ear, this should cause the elbow to point straight.

The next step is to raise the left leg up approximately twelve inches while simultaneously lifting the shoulders up off of the floor.

During the lifting, contract the oblique muscles and hold for a five or ten seconds. Return to a lying down position in a slow, steady move. After doing one set on this side, switch to the other side and do a set.

The Seated Knee Drop

From the floor, place the body in a seated position on the hipbones. This is not the same as normal sitting on the buttocks. Stabilize the body by placing hands on the floor in back of the body. Now, place the feet flat on the floor while ben ding the knees and pulling the ankles in close together.

Next, move the knees downward and toward the right side, the feet should stay on the floor even though they will roll during the movement. Keep lowering the knees toward the floor until they are about six inches from it.

This position should be held for a few seconds before moving the knees back to their original upright position and switching to the left side to do the same move.

The focal point of this exercise is using the abdominal muscles and not the bodys natural energy to lower the knees and legs. To accomplish this, a slow, steady movement is necessary while focusing.

Exercises to Lose Love Handles - Exercises Personal Trainers Steal From Me!

Yes, you heard that correctly, I've got exercises to lose love handles that I do that personal trainers at my gym steal from me! I don't mind that they take them from me; it just tells me that they find a lot of benefit from these exercises as well as solidifying the fact that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to oblique muscles as well as upper and lower ab exercises.

I know that the human body is extremely adaptable and can easily learn how to lose belly fat. Once an exercise is performed enough, the body learns the most energy efficient way for performing it. This in turn prevents us from feeling that burn or worse, the exercise from being effective at all. This is one of the reasons walking isn't as effective for losing belly fat as running, because we walk every day! These exercises could be adjusted so that a person who hasn't worked out in years could perform it and can be made challenging for the most fit of people.

Lunge and Twist's- with a dumbbell of a comfortable weight in each hand I would perform the start of a normal lunge. On the way up instead of bringing my follow leg straight forward, I would raise my knee as if I was trying to touch my opposite shoulder with my knee. From there, while still standing on one leg, I'd continue on with the normal lunge. Side Sit Ups- I'd lie down on my back and would keep my knees at a 90 degree angle and twist my hips to the left side and proceed to do 20 sit ups. Then I'd switch sides (twisting my hips to the right) and do 20 more sit ups. This exercise can be increased in difficulty by holding onto a weighted plate (I sometimes use a 25lb plate).

Remember, exercises can target specific muscles; they can't target specific areas for losing body fat. So, if you think that doing 1000's of sit ups will lose belly fat, you might be in for a disappointing outcome. In fact, many times the abdominal muscles will build up and essentially push against the belly fat, causing the person to appear bloated and actually larger than they were prior to the exercises.

Exercises for Love Handles: Defeat The Muffin Top For Good

“Love handles” might sound like a cute pet name, but there’s nothing cutesy about belly bulge oozing over the waistline of your low-rise jeans.

It’s true that diet and regular exercise can help you lose the weight—and keep it off— but, the most important thing to note is that, there are specific things you can do to strengthen, tone, and smooth out those pesky problem areas on your body—and this includes exercises for removing love handles.  

So, are you on the edge of your chair yet?

Great! There are some things you can do right away that will help you melt those love handles right off of your waistline.

First, do some light stretching to loosen up your body. Standing with your feet shoulder width apart—and your body relaxed—breathe in deep and raise your arms over your head. Exhale slowly while slowly bringing your arms down by your side. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

Next in the sequence, I want you to touch your toes. However, don’t just slump over to do it. Raise your arms above your head—palms facing front—breathe in deep, and as you exhale, lean over slowly and touch your toes. Be sure to keep your arms straight.
Next, inhale slowly and come back up, nice and slow, keeping your arms and spine straight. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

A good way to get your blood pumping—without doing a full cardio workout—is to do jumping jacks. 50 to 100 should be just enough to prepare your body for the love handles workout.

To begin, lie on the floor—preferably, on a soft rug, yoga mat, or even your favorite blanket because you don’t want to hurt your back on a hard floor. If that’s not necessary because your home is carpeted, at the very least, roll up a small towel and place it between the small of your back and the floor.

Lie facing the ceiling, with your arms out to your sides at shoulder height - so your body makes a T.  Without bending your knees, lift one of your legs up as far as you can, and then bring it across your body.

Keeping as much as of your body on the floor as possible while trying to touch your foot on the floor. This is a nice slow exercise, so there is no need to rush it. Repeat this 20 to 25 times—alternating legs each time.

With all of the hoopla and fanfare surrounding sit-ups, you’d think that they would be the perfect exercise for love handles, but the reality is that they only strengthen your abs. What you really want to do are crunch twists.

Lie on the floor as if you’re going to do a sit-up. Raise both your legs off the floor, keeping them straight. Raise your head with your hands unclasped behind it, and then bring your leg in toward you while touching your opposite elbow with your knee. Repeat 25 times, working up to 50.

Another good love handles exercise is the torso twist. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms stretched out to the sides, nice and high, shoulder height, with your elbows bent.

Then twist to each side, punching out with each hand (i.e., you turn to the right and punch your left hand; to the left, it’s your right hand that punches).  Repeat 100 times.

Of course, these exercises for love handles should be combined with weight training, diet, and cardio workouts to get the full effect. Do this and you’re well on your way to shedding the love handles.

This is a simple question with a very simple answer...NO! That is if you are doing exercises that are strictly targeting your love handles. To understand why they don't work, you need to understand these points:

Love handles are simply a cute name for FAT. In order to reduce the fat in that region, you must lose fat throughout your entire body. It is not possible to target your fat loss simply to one area. Losing fat requires you to burn more calories than you are taking in. Exercises targeting your love handles are generally completed sitting/lying down or standing still, and require very little movement. Therefore, the amount of calories burned is not substantial enough to promote fat loss. Exercises targeting love handles are generally designed to tone/build the muscles in that region, and not do anything with the love handles themselves. This is because the love handles and the muscles in that region are two completely separate things. Even though you may develop the best looking abdominal and oblique muscles known to mankind, they will never be seen without removing the layer of fat that resides over top.

So, what type of exercise program will help you most effectively lose these love handles? There is no one right answer to this age old question. However, it has been proven that a well designed program involving cardiovascular activity to burn calories, and strength training exercises to increase muscle tissue and increase metabolism works the best. However, before starting any exercise program, it helps to know how many calories you are able to eat combined with how many calories you need to burn to reach your weight loss goals.

Let's look at an example. Let's say that you are a 45 year old female who weighs 155 lbs, you are 5 feet 5 inches tall, and you participate in very little exercise. Over the course of the last six months, you've gained 12 lbs or 2 lbs a month, and you would like to lose that amount to get back to your weight prior to you noticing your love handles.

Knowing that you must burn 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound of fat, you must cut out or burn an extra 7,000 calories each month, or 233 (7,000 cal / 30 days) calories each day just to stop gaining weight. If you then want to lose 1 lb a week you must cut out/burn an additional 3,500 calories each week, or 500 calories (3,500 cal / 7 days) each day to meet this goal. This is a grand total of 733 calories each day in calorie reduction or calorie burning.

According to the website http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm, the amount of calories you need to consume per day to maintain your weight is 1,621 based on the example above. It is not feasible to cut out 733 calories each day, especially at the start of your program.

So, what should you do? The first suggestion is to see your physician to ensure that you are basically healthy. Then, start slow! Concentrate on stopping the 2 pounds a month of weight gain by reducing your caloric intake by 100-200 calories per day combined with a light exercise program consisting of walking, jogging, swimming, etc., and a very basic strength training program, preferably under the guidance of an experienced professional.

Once you have stopped the weight gain, then you can concentrate on losing the desired weight by adjusting your caloric intake further, and increasing the intensity of your strength training and cardiovascular routines.

There are a couple of very important notes to remember:

The above example is only a guideline, and none of the figures stated should be considered exact. There are many variables that can change these numbers such as body type, activity level, etc. Reducing your calories too much too soon can cause your body to think it is being starved, and force it to start to burn muscle for energy. As a result, your metabolic rate decreases, and the amount of fat that is burned will also decrease. Though weight can be lost without exercise, it makes the process much more difficult and potentially frustrating. Building lean muscle mass with a cardiovascular and strength training program will make the job much easier and satisfying.

As many people get older and their bodies and overall lifestyles begin to change, weight gain can be inevitable, especially around the waist. Exercises designed to target these "love handles" can be great for muscle toning, but will do very little for reducing fat. The key is a well balanced exercise program consisting of cardiovascular exercise and strength training designed to burn calories and build lean muscle mass. Though it may seem impossible, don't get frustrated. Start slow, be consistent and take it one step at a time. Very few things in life that are worthwhile come easily.

Now lift both your legs and flutter back and forth as fast as you can. You can even bend your elbows for support . Continue doing for 10-15 seconds, stop and repeat again for a couple of times.
