Are you in a relationship that does not make you happy but you do not want to hurt your partners feelings by ending it? Staying in a relationship because you are concerned about the other person is noble, but certainly not a healthy reason to stay in a relationship. Relationship depression is a very real and very serious thing that should be dealt with in a timely matter. Many people stay in depressing relationships because they do not have any other dating prospects at the current time, or they dont feel as though they can do better. That is no reason to stay put in a relationship that is making you depressed.
Step One: Why Are You Unhappy?
What about your relationship makes you unhappy? If your depression is a direct result of the way your partner is treating you, it is time to get out of that relationship. Constant put-downs and talking down to you can certainly cause a person to become distressed. Many times the person in the relationship cannot see it happening and must rely on their trusted friends and family members to tell them how much they have changed or that they are worried about you.
If you are unhappy because you are not getting enough out of the relationship as you are giving is also another indicator that you are depressed. If you are putting in 80% of the effort and your partner is only doling out 20%, then the relationship is not on an even playing ground and you are obviously more emotionally attached than they are. This can be a depressing thought, but it should also show you to move on to greener pastures where you will be getting as much as you are giving.
Step Two: Its Not Just Your Significant Other
Relationship depression can affect more than just a monogamous relationship between a husband/boyfriend and a wife/girlfriend. You can be depressed about any relationship. Perhaps you have a volatile relationship with a parent or a sibling. Many times, you can become more depressed when your problems are within a family because statistics show that families are less likely to change their ways. Addressing these issues with your family member is the best place to start. Often times it can be a misunderstanding that can be resolved quickly.
Step Three: Distance is the Best Medicine
No matter what type of relationship is causing you to become depressed, the best thing that you can do is give yourself a little space. Time and distance can help you clear your head and help you to think clearly and decide what the next step is that you should take in your relationship. Relationship depression is nothing to play around with. If distancing yourself from the situation does not help, perhaps you should seek the help of a medical professional you can help you work through your depression and relationship issues.
