Wedding Speeches - Father of the Bride Speeches

You challenge is to condense all the things you would like to say about your daughter into a brief, orderly speech. This may not be easy, as your mind will be full of the incidents that happened during her life with you.You will want to share your special feeling for her and tell people about her character traits you most admire. There will be so much you could say. Where do you start?

Write It Down

Start writing what is in your mind. It does not matter how it comes out at first or how long it is. This is the first draft and it may be the first of a few drafts. You will gradually get your thoughts in order as you progress. Leave some time between rewrites so that you are viewing them with fresh eyes. When you are satisfied with the final version, leave it and have another look at it the next day. Make any changes that are needed and then say it to your wife. She may be able to offer some constructive comments as you will be speaking on her behalf also. If you c annot say it to your wife, say it to someone who will give you constructive feedback.

Not Too Long

Make sure you time it. Anymore than about 5 minutes could be too long. I think 3 minutes is better but you can get away with a little more if it is well done. You can say a lot in 3 minutes. Most people will overlook father of the bride speeches that are a little too long because they understand the special feelings in the father/daughter relationship. However, most of us are amateurs when it comes to making a speech, and long speeches, even from accomplished speakers, can be boring.

Toast the Couple

It is your job to toast the couple so you will need to touch on their relationship. It may be that you have observed them together over a period of time and you can see why they will have a happy marriage. You may not have known the groom for long - you have seen how happy he makes your daughter and you value her judgement or you have seen a certain character trait in him that you admire. If none of these things are true, then you may have some d ifficulty in meaning what you say but you will have to come up with something that sounds sincere.

Spend some time on your father of the bride speech, write it down so you will remember the phrases in case you get stuck for words, run it past your wife or partner, keep it brief and you will do a good job on the day. Your daughter will be proud and the guests will be pleased and grateful.
